What is Pilates?
Pilates was designed by Joseph Pilates, a gymnast born in Germany. He designed a system of exercises during the First World War to help improve the rehabilitation of soldiers.
The exercises focus on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep abdominal muscles.
So in brief Pilates can help strength the spine (aiding back problems), strengthen the abs (tone up that tummy), strengthen your breathing, and strengthen your ability to concentrate, relax and focus.
Exercises are done stood, lying down, on your side and in 4 point kneeling. We teach matwork classes, sometimes adding in resistance bands, balls, rings and rollers.
“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30 you will have a whole new body” ~ Joseph Pilates.
Can I do Pilates with a medical condition?
Pilates is suitable for all people groups. We have people with chronic back pain, shoulder issues, hypermobility, hip replacements, Parkinsons and other problems come for classes. If you have a specific medical issue or injury then please do let your instructor and Priya/James know so alternative exercises can be given and you recieve the best from your class. We also offer 1-2-1 sessions and it may be suggested that you have some of these alongside your classes to give you extra support.
Do you have men in your classes too?
Pilates was designed by a man and was used to help soldiers rehabilitate in the war, so it is definitely suitable for men. We have a fair few men in our classes who find it very benefical, so do not be shy about coming along. James himself also takes part in a weekly Pilates class.
