Think it through to include driving, eating, work, relaxing\u2026. I bet it is longer than you would expect. Most people don&#8217;t realise how long they sit. We&#8217;ve turned into a society that wants to sit rather than stand. Standing is seen as harder work, however <a title=\"Sitting Is Killing You?!\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pilateswithpriya.co.uk\/sitting-is-killing-you\/\">sitting<\/a> is actually causing your body a lot of problems.<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Britain has been found to be one of the most sedentary countries in the world. We spend an a<\/span>verage of 8.9 hrs a day sitting. That&#8217;s over a third of our day sitting .<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pilateswithpriya.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/free_96834.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1469\" alt=\"Pilates with Priya: Sitting is shaving years off your life\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pilateswithpriya.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/free_96834-190x300.jpg?resize=190%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pilateswithpriya.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/free_96834.jpg?resize=190%2C300&amp;ssl=1 190w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pilateswithpriya.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/free_96834.jpg?w=222&amp;ssl=1 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Issues:<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Sitting for 8-10 hrs leads to a 90% gtr risk of Diabetes and 18% greater chance dying from heart disease and certain cancers. Now those are huge statistics. No wonder diabetes is on the increase.<\/div>\n<div>Sitting for 60 mins \u00a0or more impairs the \u00a0blood flow through the arteries. When the blood doesn&#8217;t flow as easily you are at higher risk of a \u00a0stroke and heart disease. A simple 5 minute walk every hour can help negate this.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Sitting leads to a tight, less mobile back, lower back pain, tight gluteal muscles, short and <a title=\"Stretch those Hamstrings to help your back.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pilateswithpriya.co.uk\/stretch-those-hamstrings-to-help-your-back\/\">tight hamstrings<\/a>. This can all lead to back and shoulder pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Remedies:<\/span><\/div>\n<div>Stand up every 30 mins and have a walk around.<\/div>\n<div>Find more ways to stand up as you do things &#8211; e.g. take phone calls on your feet, walk instead of driving, stand up on the train.<\/div>\n<div>Build in regular walks to your day \u00a0&#8211; park your car further away so you walk further, have a lunchtime walk, get a dog!<\/div>\n<div>Borrow small, active children that need exercising and chasing \ud83d\ude09 (mine are available on loan).<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Look at getting a standing work station. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Use some simple leg and back stretches and <a title=\"My back hurts\u2026. what shall I do?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pilateswithpriya.co.uk\/my-back-hurts-what-shall-i-do\/\">mobility<\/a> exercises daily.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Build Pilates in more than once a week &#8211; find the right exercises for your body and do them daily.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How long do you sit for on an average day?
